Child Protection is of paramount importance in DOMCCP programmes with various activities being carried out across Manicaland Province. In Nyanga during the year 2013, DOMCCP facilitated the establishment of 12 child-led schools development committees as character building in 9 primary schools and 3 secondary schools within the district. There is high retention of primary school students of ages 3 -9 years. The schools that were targeted on direct school fees payment include Bumhira, Samanyika, Dambakupetwa, Kagore, Kambudzi, Regina, Chatindo, Manyau and Dandadzi. From these schools 65 children are under the child sponsorship program supported by Action Aid Zimbabwe.

DOMCCP conducted 5 community sensitization meetings of birth registration in the district. As such, local traditional leaders have realized the need to totally support vulnerable groups within their areas of jurisdiction. It also increased community awareness on birth acquisition since it helped to eliminate negative economic, social, cultural and religious practices that arise from lack of identity documents. The facilitation of birth registration for vulnerable children in the district, which assisted 165 children (73 boys and 92 girls), improved orphans and vulnerable children retention in schools.

In Mutare rural district, activities carried out include direct school fees payment, school block grant support and school uniforms support towards OVC.



During the year 2013, with support from Plan Australia, ten villages in Chipinge district were targeted for rights awareness. From these villages 58 community volunteers were trained on various aspects of human rights. The trainings were also meant to ensure sustainable community-based service delivery in counselling, mediation and referral of cases related to gender-based violence.


The project was also able to engage men from these villages. Male charters and men’s forums were established.

The project also went further to involve youths through the Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health (ASRH) activities. These activities were meant to increase knowledge on youths’ entitlements to access sexual reproductive health services. School health clubs were formed in 6 schools to disseminate ASRH information to school children.

The project has worked well with stakeholders such as the Police and traditional leaders who are both custodians of the law and traditional customs. There was increased duty bearer- civil society engagement between these stakeholders and the community thus some awareness sessions were jointly conducted by DOMCCP, the Police and traditional leaders.

Gender Learning Campaigns were conducted in Mutasa district, with support from Trocaire. These have seen a total of 560 (450 females & 110 males) participating in the campaigns, which created a much need platform for communities to openly discuss issues of gender based violence. Some of the solutions that the communities came up with include increasing communication between couples, eradicating harmful cultural practices like wife inheritance and engaging in income generating activities to reduce poverty levels among women. Village heads also participated in the gender learning and campaigns.


 Culture in Development

 Employing the Strengths Based Approach, the GYDI program has some interventions aligned to culture in development. There are “Ndau” cultural practices and beliefs that go a long way in curbing gender based violence and as such the program is strengthening the communities to uphold these.Traditionally, the Ndau people had traditional meeting points called ‘Bandlas.’

 This is one of the interventions in Nyanga district that the organization is currently implementing in partnership with Action Aid and Misean Cara. Community vulnerability has often continued unabated in conditions where traditionally vulnerable groups like women and children are not fully accorded their human rights or they are not aware of them . In the same manner, DOMCCP has strengthened the educational support of orphans by providing information education and communication (IEC)materials, Early childhood equipment to pre-school infants, capacitating child protection committees, establishing child led school development committees and school youth clubs.
